Ceramics

Lisa Timms-Stevens has been creating and exhibiting visual and sculptural artworks for over 30 years, both during and after her career as a journalist in print media.

The human figure has long been her central focus, offering endless challenges and possibilities. Lisa seeks to present the figure in ways that are thought-provoking and unfamiliar—encouraging viewers to pause, reflect, and see beyond everyday perception of the human form.

Her work often draws inspiration from ancient representations of gods and people. Simplified or distorted, her figures are at once grounded and vulnerable, stylistic yet graceful. They appear to emerge from the clay with their own presence, resonating with the past and often named after Greek goddesses. While the heads are modern in conception, their primitive qualities—defined by the essential forms of chin, nose, and dome—link them to timeless archetypes. Patterns, shapes, and cut-outs add further layers of meaning, echoing the symbolic depictions of rulers and deities in antiquity.

A long-term resident of the beautiful 90-Mile Beach in East Gippsland, Lisa has recently relocated to Southeast Queensland, where a new landscape and environment continue to inspire her evolving creative expression.
